Layering

The mound has to be layered- we opted for local materials as much as possible, whatever we could find around our property or the neighbours. Our mound layering went like this:

Dirt: from the ditches we'd dug around the garden bed and thrown on the middle

Horse manure: mix of broken down and fresh
Seaweed: from a local lake. We didn't wash the salt off it though have head of people doing this

Dynamic lifter with blood and bone: mixed in bucket and sprinkled over whole bed

Cardboard: wet down and then layered on thick- at least 5-10cm thickness. We collected ours from Bunnings Hardware over a couple of days- all sticky tape and staples need to be removed as they are not biodegradable!

Lucerne: layered on around 10cm thick- needed to pull apart the bales and biscuits

Leaves: We have lots of leaves and decomposed wood chips that we used as the final layer

Each layer was thoroughly soaked. The layers should go down the mound edges so that the sides can be used for planting. This meant 'rounding off' the mound so there were no sharp drops to the ditch.
