I've been away for ten days and the zuccihini didn't get picked....each plant (there are 4 or 5) pumped all its growing energy into one vegetable, producing these giant marrow. According to my Poppy, a zucchini is called zucchini until its 4 inchs (about 10cm) long and then its called a marrow. I couldn't do anything with these huge vegetable, so off to a relatives cows they went!
After picking the marrow, the plants took about 10 days to start producing other fruit- I managed to get the first small zucchini today and there are now alot of flowers on the plants.
These are two examples of the different cucumber growing in the garden- the longer cucumber is from a seedling purchased from Bunnings, whereas the smaller is a "Mid-East Prolific" grown from seeds purchased from GreenHarvest (there's a link to their website on the front of this blog). Both taste good and I think the ten days break from picking encourage the vines to produce. Cucumber is great hydration food- sprinkle a little salt or pepper and enjoy!
The corn is growing vigourously- you can see here that its at least a meter above my head and there are several cobs starting to appear.
The garden got no water during the ten days away but seemed to survive quite well- the main work when I returned was re-training and tying up plants- the tomatoes had grown and some had drooped- blocking the sun for plants underneath and damaging their stalks when the fruit was too heavy- the cucumbers, snowpeas, capscuim and even lettuce all needed support (stakes or twine) to keep fruit and leaves off the ground
